Munster have completed the signing of versatile Sharks prop Thomas du Toit on loan for a period of three months. Du Toit, a former Baby Bok representative, can operate on both sides of the scrum, but is said to be looking to cement his position as a tighthead and played mostly at 3 for the Sharks in the recently concluded Currie Cup.
South Africa were thin at 3 following the departure of Jannie du Plessis after the World Cup and loosehead prop (although not officially) is seen as a “coloured” position in some circles, with the likes of Beast Mtawarira, Trevor Nyakane and Lizo Gqoboka all in the running.
At tighthead prop, the Boks currently have the likes of Frans Malherbe, Julian Redelinghuys and Vincent Koch.
Du Toit is expected to return before the start of the Sharks’ Super Rugby campaign for 2017, but how this will affect his pre-season preparations remains to be seen.
