Springbok skipper Adriaan Strauss has announced that he will be retiring from test rugby at the end of the 2016 international season.
Bulls hooker Strauss was named captain by new Bok coach Allister Coetzee earlier this year, but his form hasn’t been the best, with several clamouring for the inclusion of young Lions star Malcolm Marx in the setup.
Strauss earned the vast majority of his caps under Heyneke Meyer but was second choice to Bismarck du Plessis for most of his career. When Bismarck went to Montpellier and 8th man Duane Vermuelen went to Toulon, Strauss was the obvious local candidate for the captain’s post, edging out Warren Whiteley (who would’ve faced competition from Vermuelen for his post)
Strauss though is only 30 (1985 born).
His exit will see the likes of Marx, Scarra Ntubeni and Bongi Mbonambi fight it out for the hookers’ spot, with Bismarck du Plessis also an outside bet to be restored to the setup incase Coetzee feels he needs experience Continue reading “Adriaan Strauss retiring from rugby- Strauss to quit test rugby at the end of 2016”
